Next Fest has never been more crowded. This week's small hits were found elsewhere

October's Next Fest lists over 7,000 games, two-thirds more than June's, so a demo has never had more company. This week's small breakouts found their players another way. One Million Coins, a solo-made digging game, launched with four followers and caught a wave of YouTube videos. Big Dig, a narrative incremental, sold over 10,000 copies in two days by its developers' count, with hardly any creator coverage.

Three market-wide trends

Contents

A hit is a game with 100 or more reviews.

As last week, price separates the field and a demo still helps. More than one in four games at $15–19.99 became hits. Under $5, fewer than one in 30 did.

Would complaints about a thin loop shorten the tail of last week's biggest new release, a painterly co-op drive? Not yet. Within a week, daily reviews fell to about a quarter of their day-two peak, the same pace as Boltgun 2, a shooter nobody calls shallow.

LessonIn the first fortnight a big audience outruns the complaints. The test comes when word of mouth has to carry it.

Red Chat Ritual – Tsumimi Time, a Japanese horror mystery played through a streamer's chat, launched with about 4,400 followers and at No. 1 on Popular Upcoming. On day one, negative reviews outnumbered positive more than two to one; the next day the developer raised the starting money in response to feedback. Loop Dungeon, an incremental dungeon RPG, climbed to fourth on the same list. A third of its first-day reviews were negative, on the day its developer posted workarounds for a Windows 11 startup crash.

Digging is the loop to watch. Only a handful of mining games are old enough to judge, but four of them became hits, and this week One Million Coins and Big Dig joined them from the newer crop. On the desktop, it matters whether you made a game. Idlers like Deskrawl, an idle action RPG that runs along the edge of your screen, over-perform; of the pure utilities, such as focus timers and screen pets, none old enough to judge became a hit. Leaderboards alone don't sell a game either, and games built around async play hit below average.

How they were found

Contents

From developer announcements, daily review counts, Steam's lists and YouTube. dev developer-reported · est estimated · inf inferred from timing.

Before launch

A $2.49 first-person incremental from solo developer ShoXx, published by Oyen & Umi Games. You dig through a vault of coins and buy faster tools. Four followers on launch day, though it sat 36th on Popular Upcoming.

Launch

13 Oct. Two reviews in two days. On day three, DangerouslyFunny (2.8M subscribers) and the incremental channel Idle cub posted videos that each passed 200,000 views.

After launch

Daily reviews nearly tripled on 17 Oct inf, the day ImCade and the Russian channel СТОДНЕВКА added over a million views between them. French, German and Japanese channels followed.

Before launch

A two-person narrative incremental: dig up artifacts, grow a museum and help Mayor Dog win an election. Co-published by Bird Gang and Gamersky Games, with a demo out since the summer. Just 337 followers, but in its last week it climbed Popular Upcoming from 286th to ninth.

Launch

19 Oct, Next Fest's first day, at 25% off. 174 reviews in two days, about 500 for every thousand followers.

After launch

Its developers say it sold "over 10,000" copies in 48 hours dev. Its biggest YouTube video had about 12,000 views, so Steam's own lists and the demo probably did most of the work inf.

  • Followers predicted nothing this week.Big Dig and Loop Dungeon had a few hundred followers each, yet drew 5–18× more reviews per follower than Red Chat Ritual and GemCraft, a remastered tower defense collection. Chart rank didn't separate them either, since all four climbed Popular Upcoming and Red Chat Ritual reached No. 1.
  • Launching into Next Fest can work.Big Dig launched as the festival opened, with 7,000 demos competing for the same visitors, and had its best day on the second.

What a small team can copyIf you make an incremental, get it to the genre's channels around launch and price it for an impulse buy. One Million Coins cost $2.49.

What players reward and punish

Contents

From this week's ratings, daily review counts and developers' patch notes, set against what players said last week.

  • Give players a clock and they race. One Million Coins has a leaderboard for the fastest full clear. Runners pushed it hard enough that the developer tightened its anti-cheat checks, and admits he can't stop them all. Its rating rose from 87% to 92% as the creator wave arrived.
  • The hits answer fast.Big Dig logged "over 500 user reports" in two days and shipped two patches, one for lost saves, and it still holds 95%. One Million Coins posted seven updates in ten days.
  • A quick fix doesn't move a verdict.Legion Breaker eased its end-game grind on day four, after players asked for more depth. A week on, its rating has slipped from 77% to 76%, and the new content it promises hasn't arrived.
  • A bad launch is hard to climb out of.No Such Place, the extraction shooter criticized at launch for AI voices its store page didn't disclose, hasn't recovered, and about 160 reviews later it's still at 61%.

Where the hits are, by tag

Job Simulator now tops the map, just ahead of Organizing, though both are small tags and Organizing's newest games are struggling. In the crowded corner, Arcade, 2D Platformer and Minimalist still hit far below average.

Upcoming games

Contents

The biggest demos on Steam's indie Popular Upcoming and Most Wishlisted lists around Next Fest, by players at a daily reading. Followers are a weak proxy for wishlists (very roughly 5–20×).

GameReleaseDemo playersWhy it matters
Find The NeedleQ4 2026 (EA)11,440The game behind the viral needle-in-a-haystack Shorts. Its demo peaked on the eve of Next Fest and is the biggest on Steam's upcoming charts.
Abyssal LapidaryComing soon3,989A gothic gem-cutting job sim. Rose from 323rd to 128th on Most Wishlisted in three days of Next Fest.
Just Volleyball4 Nov2,867Simple controls, 1v1 to 6v6. A sports game breaking out of a weak category.
Hands Over30 Oct (EA)1,279Five-player co-op horror about bluffing at a table. Second on Popular Upcoming.
Emberville27 Oct (EA)1,121The most-followed launch of the coming week (about 44,000), and first on Popular Upcoming.
Legend of Defenders2 Nov1,087An idle tower defense game published by Gamersky Games.

Most of the festival's biggest demos are simple loops with a concrete job, like digging for a needle, cutting gems or serving a volleyball. Find The Needle is the one to watch. Its premise went viral on Shorts long before launch, while two needle games released last week did only modestly.

Method and caveats

Data. A snapshot taken 23 Oct 2026 of every Indie-tagged game on Steam released or out of Early Access in the last 120 days (5,483 after exclusions), plus the indie Top Sellers, New & Trending, Popular Upcoming and Most Wishlisted lists. Sources are Steam's public store APIs: reviews, tags, prices, dates, current players, daily review histograms and community follower counts. Thirty-one major publishers are excluded. The previous snapshot (17 Oct) provides the week-over-week comparisons.

Hit. 100+ lifetime reviews, measured on games released 21–120 days ago so each has had time to accumulate. Review-to-sales multiples of 30–60× are an industry rule of thumb, not data; Big Dig's developer-reported 10,000 copies in 48 hours works out at roughly 45–55 per review, the upper half of that range.

Next Fest and AI. Roster sizes: GameDiscoverCo for June 2025 (2,645) and June 2026 (4,382); SlopDodge, an unofficial roster browser, for October (7,236 games, snapshot 21 Oct). Other counts of this fest, such as SteamDB's 7,164 demos, differ slightly depending on what is counted. Disclosure shares: GameDiscoverCo for February (21%) and June (27%), SlopDodge for October (36%). The baseline is a random sample of 220 Indie-tagged games released in the last 120 days; a game counts as disclosing when its store page carries Steam's "AI Generated Content Disclosure" section (104 of 220, 47%, with a margin of about ±7 points). Disclosure is self-reported, so all these shares are floors. The share of the growth from disclosing games compares SlopDodge's October counts with June's GameDiscoverCo figures, which were counted differently.

Launch profiles. "Per 1k followers" divides reviews in the first two calendar days by the last follower count before launch. Red Chat Ritual launched on 22 Oct, so its second day is incomplete. Demo players are a single daily reading, not a peak.

Themes. Claude coded the setting, tone, social mode, loop and scope of all 311 hits and a random sample of 881 non-hits from their store descriptions and tags (299 newly coded this week). Hit rates are re-weighted for the sampling. Each sampled non-hit stands for about 5 releases.

Gaps this week. Steam Community blocked follower lookups from 19 Oct, so launch-follower counts are the last readings from 17–18 Oct and upcoming games' follower counts are several days old. Steam's Popular Upcoming list could not be read on 22 Oct. Steam's review text was unavailable to us on publication day, so the section on what players reward and punish draws on ratings, daily review counts, developers' patch notes and last week's reviews rather than this week's review text. Next Fest (19–26 Oct) overlapped the review window. The tidy-up comparison uses reviews in each game's first seven days.
